Ben - cross country and wrestling Chip - lots of activities
Jack - art
Whit - violin
Jonathan - cross country
We did our project on IR temperature sensors to monitor restaurant and cafeteria buffet line to keep food out of the Danger Zone.
But we had other ideas before that...
Other Project Ideas We Had
We read about honey from China being contaminated. We did some research and it seemed that the solution to chloramphenicol-contaminated Chinese honey was just enforcing regualtions we already have. Dr. Paul Arnold, Science Department Chair at Young Harris College, also teaches beekeeping. He said that we might want to be concerned about oxytetracycline-contaminated domestic honey because American beekeepers use that antibiotic foron bees sometimes. The solution seems to be to ask beekeepers to voluntarily use the test for oxytetracycline that already exisit – so no project there! Next, we thought we had a cool project. The restaurant woer and cafeteria manger we talked to and emailed to both said they had high worker turnover and more training was always an issue. We thought free online food safety training games for food industry workers would be useful. Ben opened a Quia account and started one. We were going to translate it into Spanish as well. Then we heard that training might not count as a project, so we changed again. However, we're asking teams to play our game and will give a prize to the high scorer. Ms. Garmilla said she'd use the game with her staff. Mr. Greenbaum said he might. We'll put the game in our teacher's account. Ben's 30-day free trial is almost up.
